We visited Donna Jean in San Diego for dinner — I was really excited to try it out since their menu is 100% vegan. I love it when restaurants have vegan options, but 100% vegan places are my favorite!

ATMOSPHERE

Donna Jean is super relaxed and cozy feeling. We chose to sit outside where they have lights strung up all around and cute, rustic table set-ups. Located at 2949 Fifth Ave San Diego, CA 92103, we took an Uber to get here and I was glad because all of the metered street parking was full.

MENU

Everything at Donna Jean is vegan and there is a lot to choose from. They have handmade pasta, pizzas, a variety of starters, other entrees, and desserts. Since this was our first time at Donna Jean and we love 100% vegan places, we tried a few of their appetizers, mains, and a dessert. Their menu is seasonal and they update it all the time. On the night we went, they switched menus to serve their homemade pasta so we had to try it.

WHAT WE ORDERED

Nashville Hot Shrooms

We ordered the Nashville Hot Shrooms (breaded oyster mushrooms, pickles, house hot sauce, and white bread); and the Fancy Garlic Fries (seared fingerling potatoes, mojo de ago, fried olives, and parsley) from the Starters.

Smoke & Sprout Cavatelli
Four Horseman pizza + Fancy Garlic Fries

From the Handmade Pasta section, we ordered the Smoke & Sprout Cavatelli (garlic butter, brussels sprout leaves, and smoked sweet potato); and we also got the Four Horseman pizza (smoked cheddar, mozzarella, ricotta, 7dust, pesto, and tomato).

Espresso Bread Pudding

For dessert, we ordered one of the Espresso Bread Pudding.

Everything we ordered was seriously amazing. The pasta was the best I’ve ever eaten; so buttery and delicious – 10/10! The pizza was also amazing; I can’t say enough good things about it.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

We had the best meal ever at Donna Jean and I can’t wait to be able to go again. I heard that the Cast Iron Mac & Cheese is one of their best dishes, so I will definitely try that next time. If you are in San Diego, you have to check it out — they’re open from 11 – 9:30pm everyday with brunch on Saturday + Sunday from 10 – 3pm. I saw on their Instagram that they are open on Thanksgiving too and have catering options.
